[EN] Siegfried Kessler began learning piano at the age of four. After the death of his father and the internment of his mother at age eleven, he was placed in an orphanage where he continued his classical piano training. It was after seeing Jacques Dieval in his hometown and buying his first jazz record, City of Jazz played by Stan Kenton, that Kessler decided to dedicate himself to jazz. When the Saar region became German again, Kessler moved to France but traveled frequently, particularly to the Netherlands where he learned sailing.

Kessler was interested in all forms of jazz and accompanied, among others, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, Hervé Czak, and Archie Shepp. In 1969, he formed the post-Coltrane quartet Perceptions with Didier Levallet (double bass), Yochk’o Seffer (saxophones), and Jean-My Truong (drums) that became one of the emblematic free jazz formations in France.

In the 1970s, passionate about contemporary electro-acoustic music, he listened to Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Mauricio Kagel, and turned towards free jazz. He recorded his first album as a trio with Barre Phillips and Steve McCall (Live at the Gill's Club). He also played with Hervé Bourde, Daunik Lazro, Nelly Pouget, and the singers Jacques Bertin and Gilles Elbaz.

His encounter with Archie Shepp was decisive. He accompanied the tenor saxophonist for about ten years. In 2005, they recorded the album First Take on the occasion of Shepp's personal label, Archieball. The presentation of this duo at the Maroquinerie in Paris made an impact.

Kessler multiplied musical explorations, including the famous Nam, "a piece for modern music, modern dance, and modern sculpture," a performance mounted in 1985 with his then companion, dancer Maroussia Vossen, and sculptor René Lunel.

In the 1980s, Kessler founded the Kaztrio with Jean-Pierre Arnaud (drums) and Michel Zenino (double bass), and then met drummer and percussionist Michel Bachevalier with whom he formed a captivating duo (the album Catamaran).

Siegfried Kessler, nicknamed Siggy by his musical colleagues, lived for twenty years on a 12-meter sailboat, Hush, a Maïca bought in the mid-1980s and shipwrecked in 2003. Between tours, he put his bags on his sailboat, moored at La Grande Motte.

On May 26, 2007, a sailboat trip was organized from La Grande-Motte to the island of Frioul, dear to Siggy. His ashes were scattered in Frioul, where Siggy always moored his boat. Musicians accompanied him with music.

La présentation de ce duo, à la Maroquinerie, à Paris, a marqué les esprits. Kessler multiplie les explorations musicales dont le célèbre Nam, « une pièce pour musique moderne, danse moderne et sculpture moderne », spectacle monté en 1985 avec sa compagne d’alors, la danseuse Maroussia Vossen, et le sculpteur René Lunel. Dans les années 1980, Kessler fonde le Kaztrio avec Jean-Pierre Arnaud (drums) et Michel Zenino (contrebasse) puis rencontre le batteur et percussionniste Michel Bachevalier avec qui il forme un duo captivant (l'album Catamaran). Siegfried Kessler, surnommé Siggy par ses collègues musiciens, vivait depuis vingt ans sur un bateau à voile de 12 mètres, Hush, un Maïca acheté au milieu des années 1980 et naufragé en 2003. Entre deux tournées il posait ses bagages sur son voilier, amarré à La Grande Motte. Le 26 mai 2007 a été organisée une traversée en voiliers au départ de la Grande-Motte pour l'île du Frioul chère à Siggy. Ses cendres ont été dispersées au Frioul, à l'endroit où Siggy amarrait toujours son bateau. Des musiciens et musiciennes l'ont accompagné en musique.
